I LOVE trying new products. One thing I do not like trying, however, is shampoo and conditioner. My hair is stringy and greasy. I’m a “have to wash everyday or look like a dirtball” type of person. Dove has been my go-to for many years. This is not to say that I haven’t tried other products for my hair – because I definitely have! Unfortunately most of these products lead to flat, limp, over-moisturized greasy hair OR dried out and stripping my color. A lot of people assume that I am a natural brunette, and I’m really not. I’m closer to blonde than anything else. I have not seen my natural hair color on my head since I was 14 years old and I met my husband. (He drops subtle hints here and there about my going back to blonde someday. I’m hooked on the brown. Maybe one day he will wear me down.)
A few months ago I painted color into my hair. (Unless I am home in Pennsylvania and near one of my friends who does hair – I don’t allow others to touch it. I trim my own hair and dye it.) The color turned out awesomely, but I had to strip my hair with bleach in order to get the new color in. This left my ends dull and damaged. This is par for the course with ANY stripping of your hair. Usually my hair rebounds within a few days, but because I live in Wyoming and despite the date we still have snow falling and snow on the ground, my hair is drier than dry. Drier than it has ever EVER been! The new color didn’t help that.
Dove, even the intense moisturizing treatment, wasn’t cutting it for me anymore. I tried leave-in conditioner. All it did was make my hair dry and flat. What the heck? So one Saturday morning I was sitting in front of the TV waiting for the Food Network to start showing actual cooking shows. I had one infomercial left to go and I was feeding the baby anyway, so I watched. I could handle a half hour. I was captivated and sucked in within 5 minutes. It was the advertisement for Wen Cleansing Conditioner. I immediately got onto Amazon (my go-to these days) and purchased a bottle. I wanted to see what it could do for me.
It arrived later that week and I used it almost immediately. Because I have stringy, greasy, yet dry hair I honestly didn’t have my hopes up. The price tag was a little steep ($32.00!) but I figured if I hated it I had 3 sisters to give it to – or a husband that will use anything on his head. The Wen infomercial and bottle says to use 15-25 pumps for long hair! ARE YOU KIDDING ME?! They also “recommend” you repeat it. Uhm, how about heck to the no?! So I started with 10 pumps. I massaged my scalp really well, added a splash or two of water, and pulled it down through my hair. At this point I just pulled it up in a bun on my head and finished my shower routine. Right before I rinsed my hair I went ahead and took a brush and brushed through my hair. This is something I would NEVER do before – because my hair is stringy and tangles easily. Especially when wet. I was pleasantly surprised that the brush went through so well. With no breakage! The one downside for me was the smell. I am NOT a fan of the Fig smell that I purchased. I was expecting a sweet, mellow scent. I can’t even describe the smell of this. I’m sure it would be different with other versions. (I’d like to try the Sweet Almond Mint!)
I rinsed my hair and I was not expecting anything much. In fact, I was expecting my hair to be a greasy mess. I just washed my hair with conditioner afterall. No way did it work, right?
So I gave my hair a good brush and let it air dry. I very rarely blow dry my hair anymore … mom to a 4 month old and all.
A few hours later I went back and found that my hair was shiny and not frizzy at all, yet it had volume. I was sold!
A week later I was standing in the shower going through my routine and noticed that
holy crap my shampoo was halfway gone. Blast it all and having to use 10-15 pumps on my hair! I quickly discovered that our budget would not support $60 a month on shampoo.
This sent me on a mad dash to Amazon and Google to discover other cleansing conditioners. I found two that seemed reputable. Hair One and Lisa Rachel. I purchased both and they arrived a few days later.
When they arrived I noticed that they were in the same exact bottle – immediately. One of the tops wouldn’t pop – meaning I had to switch the tops around. Honestly, probably user error. I’m a little haphazard and airheaded in most areas of life. 🙂 I also noticed that they smelled *exactly* the same. They looked *exactly* the same out of the bottle. They have the *exact* same ingredients.
Now I don’t know if they are the same, but the smell and look the same. I’m calling Hydrox Cookie Conspiracy here. My father is convinced that the Hydrox Cookies (Oreos knockoffs) are made by Oreo just repackaged for the generic company. Everytime he buys them he goes on and on about how they have to be Oreos. They taste JUST LIKE Oreos! Blah blah blah.
How did these two stack up against the all hallowed Wen, however?
Honestly? Both smelled a lot better than the Wen scent I chose. Both performed well, but out of all 3 products …
What is the verdict? Which do I love most?
It wasn’t a tough decision for me at all – Lisa Rachel Cleansing Conditioner.
Here’s Why: LR Cleansing Conditioner smells better, moisturizes just as well as Wen at more than half the price, did not require Wen’s 15 pumps but instead I was able to use 10, cleans well, and leaves behind great volume, shine, and manageability.
So are you ready for the most exciting part?

This eye palette is comparable to the Urban Decay Naked Palette. Honestly, I love it. I’ve never used Urban Decay’s Naked Palette because the $50 price tag is enough to send me reeling and running.
