This was a recipe that I found while surfing Pinterest one evening. I am constantly trying to find something different, but also something I know my family will like. I have a steak loving husband and a 2 year old who likes anything that is saucy and flavorful, so I thought I’d give it a whirl! Turns out it is amazing and in the words of my husband, “better than any Chinese restaurant,” and the little one cleared her plate and asked for more, which never ever happens!! So needless to say this has become a family favorite!
I HIGHLY recommend marinating the steak, it makes all the difference! For the marinade you will need 6 simple ingredients that most people have around the house they are: baking soda, sugar, cornstarch, low-sodium soy sauce, water, and vegetable oil (I used canola) and mixed everything together in a medium sized bowl. I had a very nice, 1.5lb sirloin steak that I had cut into very thin strips and then seasoned with a little garlic salt and onion powder and threw into the marinade and let it sit for about 4 hours the recipe only called for 1 hour, but I got everything together during nap time.
I then got the sauce ready for this recipe it called for: low- sodium soy sauce, brown sugar, minced garlic, flour, sherry (which I did not use due to not having any and not wanting to buy something special for 1 recipe.) Whisk ingredients together till smooth.
To cook, I took my large sauté pan, and heated some oil over med-high heat until it started to shimmer, added the marinated steak and half of the sauce mixture. I cooked steak for about 4 min stirring often till no longer pink.
I used thawed, frozen broccoli this time, but usually use fresh like the recipe calls for, if using fresh you will need to sauté the broccoli in some hot oil before cooking the steak, remove the broccoli, cook the steak, and then add cooked broccoli. Because I used frozen, I didn’t want to overcook broccoli, so I added after steak was cooked along with other half of sauce mixture.
I mixed stir fry frequently until heated through.
I served this over brown rice to complete this delicious meal!!

Beef and Broccoli: Serves 4.
Prep Time: 10 minutes + 1 hour for marinade Cook Time: 8 minutes
First, marinate the meat:
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp sugar
1 tbsp cornstarch
1 tbsp low-sodium soysauce
1 tbsp water
2 tbsp vegetable oil
1 1/2 lbs flank steak, sliced into thin strips
-Whisk together the baking soda, sugar, cornstarch, soy sauce, water, and vegetable oil in a large bowl. Toss the steak with the marinade to coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour, then proceed below.
1/2 c low-sodium soy sauce (Do NOT use regular. The final product will be way too salty)
2 tbsp brown sugar
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 tbsp flour
1 tbsp sherry
3 tbsp vegetable oil
2 heads broccoli, crowns only (I used 1 bag of broccoli florets this time)
1. In a small bowl, stir together the soy sauce, brown sugar, garlic, flour and sherry (if using) until smooth.
2. In a large wok or sauté pan, heat 2 tablespoons of the vegetable oil over high heat until shimmering. Add broccoli and sauté 3 minutes, stirring often. Transfer broccoli to a plate.
3. Reduce heat to medium-high. Carefully add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the hot pan. Add the marinated meat and half of the sauce mixture and sauté for 3-4 minutes, stirring often, until the meat is cooked through and no longer pink. Stir in the broccoli and remaining sauce. Sauté 1 minute more.
